Suw Charman is a writer/web designer/internet
entrepreneur who's been learning Welsh since April 98.
Amongst other things, she has written features for the Melody
Maker and provided BBC Wales Online with an introduction
to Welsh, Just
Enough Welsh to Impress, (under her previous nom de plume,
Lewis).
Suw went to university in Cardiff where she worked on the award
winning student newspaper, Gair Rhydd, and came to know
an number of Welsh speakers. The first phrase she learnt, after
gwasanaethau (services),
was dw i eisiau dy gorff, a chat up line she has
never used. However, it wasnt until several years later
when |
|
she became a fan of the Super Furry Animals that she started to seriously
learn yr hen iaith.
English by birth and descent, Suw has become a keen supporter of
the Welsh language and particularly of adult learners, launching
the Clwb Malu
Cachu Yahoo group in May 2000 and this web site in January 2001.
The idea for both was born of the frustrations felt by Suw and fellow
learner Debs Williams regarding the lack of online learning opportunities
for adults at the time.
After working for a few years as a web designer and online content
manager, Suw launched a new service for Welsh learners - Get
Fluent. The Get Fluent worksheets have proven to be a huge hit
with learners, and are available for purchase on CD-ROM. The CMC/Get
Fluent shop also sells a range of Welsh t-shirts.
Suw is a keen blogger, writing in English at Chocolate
and Vodka and in Welsh here on Clwb
Malu Cachu.
She is still a big fan of the Super Furry Animals.
